The Synaptic Package Manager

The Synaptic package manager is a program installation utility for the GNU/Linux system, with a Graphical User Interface(GUI). It allows for as easy as 1-2-3 installations of the many free and open source software programs.

Synaptic knows about a list of programs through the enabled package repositories. A package repository is a computer server that contains programs for download and installation. If you enable only official repositories, you can not install a virus, or other malicious software onto your computer.

Here I show how to enable an official repository, search for, install, and remove a program.

To enable an official package repository,

1. Click Settings on the top.

2. Select Repositories from the drop-down. The Software Preferences dialogue appears.

3. Click Add. The Edit Repository... dialogue appears.

4. Check off what repositories you want enabled, then press Enter, or click OK. The Software Preferences dialogue appears again.

5. Press Enter, or click OK. The Information dialogue appears.

6. Click Yes to reload the program list in the main window. The Downloading package information dialogue appears.

7. The new program list is displayed in the main window.
